'Orcinus Orca' Performance by I Solisti Venet; conducted by Claudio Scimone
Last night I had the honour of listening to my piece ‘Orcinus Orca’ performed by I Solisti Veneti and conducted by the coolest Maestro ever, Claudio Scimone. Along side my work was the music of other female composers from all over the world, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have been apart of this beautiful program celebrating International Women’s day.
Orcinus Orca was originally composed in 2011 for my HSC music 2 composition. I was extremely surprised when I was told about its selection as I had written so long ago and is my first piece for any string insturment, let along string Quintet.
The piece was inspired by Bruce Heald’s Optus ad - which replicated the sounds of whales with classical instrumentation. I remember being really inspired by this piece as I hadn’t heard string techniques being used in that way. Another influence at the time (that I can remeber) was Ravel’s String Quartet in F major. I think I had just stumbled across that piece and spent a lot of time studying that score to see how he wrote for string instruments.
It was really nice to revisit this piece so long after I had composed it and I think 17 year old me would have been stoked! It was a wonderful experience to hear my music performed live in Padova, Italy I would like to thank the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica for the opportunity to have this performance and all the incredible work they are doing for women in music all around the world.
